Xin Nian Kuai Le (Happy New Year)
Chinese New Year has kicked off with a firecracker across the globe today.
The Destination Melbourne office has been decked out with lanterns, paper decorations and dragons galore. We have rolled nine oranges through the front door (to encourage good luck for the next 12 months) and we plan on eating a ridiculous amount of dumplings over the next 15 days.
Our Facebook, twitter, YouTube and website have all been transformed for the Festival.
One of the key features of Chinese New Year is community – we encourage you to pop down to the office for a coffee (and a fortune cookie) if you are free in the coming fortnight – or join one of our digital platforms to follow the campaign online.
Each day we will be posting a quirky fact, “word of the day”, horoscope and delicious recipe on our website – check out Day One here.
We also have a number of guest bloggers who will be providing us with informed pieces on the China market during the campaign – look out for commentary from ATEC, Sovereign Hill, Melbourne Airport and the Mailman Group.
Our call to industry for Chinese New Year initiatives also returned a great calendar of things to do during the Festival. The Prahran, Queen Victoria and Dandenong markets are all running special foodie events.
Crown Casino has transformed The Atrium with an elaborate Chinese aerial structure, clustered with delicate spring flowers, lucky charms, firecrackers and stunning internally lit lanterns. The special event “Hawkers Bazaar” will kick off on January 27 with performances from the Dragon Tenors daily. Food demonstrations by the ever popular ‘Tommy Chung the Noodle man’ are sure to be a hit – as will you if you choose to partake in the Chinese New Year Karaoke competition!
The Chinese Museum is also running special events during the Festival – make sure you check out their website for your dose of history and culture.
We hope that you enjoy the Festival and this campaign. Your feedback is encouraged and welcome – we aim to make this campaign an annual activity on the Destination Melbourne calendar – and of course we plan on doing it bigger and better next year!
