The red envelope, hongbao in Mandarin or LaiSee in Cantonese, traditionally holds a monetary gift and is commonly given during holidays or special occasions.

The colour of the envelope symbolizes good luck and is intended to ward off evil spirits. Refusing to accept a red envelope is considered extremely bad luck and is said to result in an unfortunate new year. Click here for more information.
