Annual Events

Destination Melbourne hosts several annual events each year:

Global Destinations Forum

Destination Melbourne’s Global Destinations Forum is an annual event which showcases destinations that demonstrate world’s best practice in destination management and marketing. The forum is a great opportunity to hear about visitor development and engagement strategies from other global cities.

Previous speakers have included:

»  2011 – Rick Antonson, CEO and President of Tourism Vancouver. Rick spoke about livability and ‘visitability’. Our two great cities are often compared on Most Livable City lists but how would we compare in relation to visitability?

»  2010 – Kenneth Wardrop, Chief Executive of the Destination Edinburgh Marketing Alliance (DEMA). Kenneth shared his insights on how DEMA is leading the promotion of Edinburgh through public and private sector collaboration.

»  2009 – Clive Geddes, Mayor of Queenstown Lakes District Council, New Zealand. Clive showcased how Queenstown has become an outstanding global destination by working in partnership with local government and the industry.

“Hearing from, and engaging with, internationally renowned tourism leaders has provided valuable new perspectives and insights” – Tracy Hore, Head of Sales & Marketing, Southern Star Observation Wheel

Date: October, 2012

»  Bring the visitor industry together in a positive and inclusive way

»  Identify ways to improve the quality of the visitor experience

»  Identify meaningful career paths for people who work in the industry

»  Encourage Victorians to get out and about in their own backyard

»  Create media interest about the value of visitors to Victoria

VTW 2012 will  run from  September 3 – 8

Destination Melbourne and Victorian Tourism Industry Council run a number of events throughout the week. These include: Melbourne Tourism Industry Exchange, the Tourism Industry Amazing Race, Local Government Breakfast and the MTILP Leadership Summit and Dinner.

Melbourne Tourism Industry Exchange (MTIE)

The Melbourne Tourism Industry Exchange (MTIE) provides the opportunity for the visitor industry to engage, network and share product information.

Attendees include Visitor Information Centre volunteers, hotel concierges and front of house staff, conference organisers, tour coach drivers/guides, tour operators, taxi drivers and Tourism Victoria staff. MTIE is an official training day for the City of Melbourne’s volunteers providing them with the opportunity to stay abreast of what’s new in Melbourne and surrounds.

Attractions, accommodation properties, restaurants, retailers, transport companies and regional tourism organisations are invited to showcase their products to people who have day-to-day contact with visitors to Melbourne. It is a great opportunity to showcase your product or region and meet face-to-face with those that promote your product on a daily basis.
