Melbourne Tourism Leaders reaching for the skies...
The Melbourne airport was an ideal venue to host the most recent Melbourne Tourism Industry
Leadership Program workshop, as the end of the program draws near and participants begin to consider life beyond MTILP and their future ambitions.
The leadership topics of the day were 'Methods of Influence' and 'Execution Excellence', these topics delved into the finer detail around management of staff and tools which can be implemented in unpredictable times to achieve predictable results, topics were given real life practical application to current issues such as, dealing with the aftermath of bushfires and GFC.
Participants were provided with personal thoughts on leadership and background on the future direction of Melbourne Airport from Damian Tkalec, Executive General Manager of Corporate Development. As well as some fascinating and timely insights into the world of leadership in politics from someone who has had a birds-eye view by ATEC CEO, Matt Hingerty.
The next MTILP workshop will form part of the Melbourne Tourism Industry Leadership Summit which will be held in Victorian Tourism Week; participants of this year's program will be joined by participants of 2009 MTILP and key industry leaders. The Summit is designed to explore new ways of thinking about inspiring leadership to grow the whole of Melbourne as an outstanding global visitor experience through cross pollination and sharing of ideas.

back to topThe Hon. Gavin Jennings, Minister for Environment and Climate Change, announced on Tuesday that the Australian Garden has been granted early acceptance to the prestigious RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2011 in London.
The RHS Chelsea Flower Show is renowned as the world's most prestigious garden exhibition. Lasting five days each May, the RHS Chelsea Flower Show features the latest horticultural trends and displays excellence in garden design. Described as 'the Mount Everest of the gardening world', landscape designers from around the globe compete for the chance to display their creations at Chelsea. Each year there are 157,000 visitors and 1,500 international media, along with visits from royal patrons.
The Australian Garden at Chelsea will focus on the central design and interpretive story told by the Australian Garden at the Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne - the Journey of Water. The garden will depict the arid outback of Australia, characterised by the absence of water, and then the gradually increasing presence of water in landscapes during an imaginary journey to the wetter, urban east coast. Along the way the Show Garden celebrates the wonderful array of colours, shapes, scents and foliage of Australia's remarkable plantlife, while water wells up from an inland mound spring, tumbles down a cliff, and flows to the home gardens of the populous coastline. With 3,085 shrubs and trees selected and a box of rare and threatened seed being shipped from the Royal Botanic Garden Melbourne, many of the Australian plants in the Show Garden have never been exhibited at the Chelsea Flower Show.
"By presenting such a high quality display to an international audience there will be real tourism benefits for Victoria," Dr Philip Moors, Director and Chief Executive of the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne said on Tuesday. "Victoria is renowned for the quality of its diverse parks and gardens. Our display at Chelsea will give people one more reason to visit Victoria."
"Early acceptance to the Chelsea Flower Show is a rare honour. This demonstrates the outstanding quality of the Australian Show Garden which will be at Chelsea and also the high regard the RHS has for the team at RBG Melbourne. We are excited about this opportunity to present the multi-award-winning Australian Garden to an international audience," Dr Moors said.

Federation Square is a well known social and events meeting place, and on the 27th April it was also the setting for a meeting of great minds, as the venue played host to the participants of the 2010 Melbourne Tourism Industry Leadership Program (MTILP).
The coming together of participants after the high impact opening residential was greatly anticipated, the participants were keen to hear how the learning's from the opening residential had changed or impacted them... 'Achieving work life balance' was top of everyone's list of achievements as well as improving 'better work day planning methods' and ability to 'blow out the cobwebs on some creative thinking' strategies.
The workshop at Federation Square included further discussions from participants on industry issues such as innovation, research, and succession planning, as well as presentations on effective leadership from Kate Brennan - CEO Federation Square & Don Richter - Marketing Manager, Tourism Victoria. The day was complimented with a hearty and well enjoyed lunch at Greek Bar and Grill and a tour of Federation Square.
The next MTILP session will be hosted by Werribee Zoo on 25th May - the team is particularly looking forward to further training on the topic of Emotional Intelligence, and hanging out with the Giraffe and Hippos.
