Results For The Survey Of Tourist Accommodation (STA) September quarter 2011
There was an increase in all indicators except establishments for Victorian Hotels, Motels & Serviced Apartments (HMSA) of 15 rooms or more (HMSA). Takings increased by 6.3% in the September 2011 quarter compared to the September 2010 quarter.
Victoria also experienced growth in the number of rooms available (+460), room nights occupied(+2.4%), occupancy rates (+0.9% pts) and employment (+0.3%) in the September 2011 quarter when compared to the same quarter in 2010.
Melbourne experienced growth across most indicators: rooms available (+537 to 26,057), room nights occupied (+2.9% to 1.8 million), occupancy rates (+0.6% pts to 75.2%), takings (+6.4% to $311.2 million) and employment (+1.1% to 15,815).
Regional Victoria experienced growth in room nights occupied (+1.1% to 651,200), occupancy rates (+0.7% pts to 45.5%) and takings (+6.2% to $92.9 million).

Domestic Visitation
Visiting friends and relatives (34.0%) was the largest purpose for visitors to Melbourne, followed by ‘holiday or leisure’ (32.9%) and ‘business’ (28.3%).
Domestic overnight visitors spent $4.8 billion in Melbourne. On average, they spent $259 per night in the region.

Regional Victoria Visitation to Melbourne
Visiting friends and relative is the main driving factor for regional Victorians to visit Melbourne, they stay an average of 2 nights and are most likely to stay with the friends and relatives during their stay.
Melbourne received nearly 8.6 million daytrip visitor from regional Victoria this is up 7.3% on December 09 figures.

The research was conducted through the Sustainable Tourism CRC by leading Australian universities.
